FBI to brief Sony employees in wake of hack

The FBI will hold “cyber security awareness briefings” for Sony Pictures Entertainment employees this week, according to an internal email obtained by The Times.

The agency will be on hand Wednesday in Culver City, according to the Monday email from Sony Pictures Chief Executive Michael Lynton.

“I know it is unsettling that we have been the target of such an attack, but I want to assure you all that we have the recognized experts working on this matter and looking out for our security,” Lynton said in the memo.

The FBI is leading the investigation into the hacking attack, which crippled Sony Pictures’ computer systems two weeks ago and has resulted in the release of personal information, including Social Security numbers, of thousands of current and former employees.

Lynton said Sony executives met Monday morning with the federal lead investigators, “who will keep Sony management informed.”

Details on the cybersecurity sessions “will be forthcoming,” Lynton wrote.

He added, “In the next day or so, your leadership teams will be arranging in-person meetings where they will share the latest developments. Please use this opportunity to bring up any questions or concerns you have.”

In addition, Sony has planned an “all hands” meeting to brief all employees on the situation. Those workers who are not in Culver City will be able to see the meeting via a video.
