China box office: ‘Jungle Book’ nears $100 million after just 10 days
Reporting from Beijing — Disney’s “The Jungle Book” continued its strong swing through China in its second week of release, earning nearly $50 million in the seven days ending Sunday and approaching $100 million after just 10 days in theaters.
Director Jon Favreau’s update of the 1960s classic accounted for half of all tickets sold last week in China, according to data from film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway.
“Jungle Book” was able to keep two new releases out of the top spot – the local production “Yesterday Once More” and Universal Pictures’ “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” which had to settle for second and third place, respectively. Both arrived in theaters on Friday.
“Yesterday Once More,” a romance from Enlight Pictures, took in $15.3 million. “The Huntsman” reaped a modest $10.6 million.
Hanging on in fourth place last week was “London Has Fallen,” the Millennium Films action film. Since its release April 8, the film has earned $51 million in China – about $10 million shy of its receipts in the U.S. and Canada.
Rounding out the top five for the week was “My New Sassy Girl,” a cross-cultural Chinese-South Korean romantic comedy, which opened with $3.7 million.
