ABC rolling out Watch ABC app to Los Angeles and other markets

Watch ABC, the online streaming service of Walt Disney Co.’s ABC broadcast network, is being rolled out to several more markets this week including Los Angeles.

Launched in New York and Philadelphia in May, Watch ABC provides a live stream of programming carried by ABC-owned TV stations and affiliates of the network. In Los Angeles, a stream of programming on KABC-TV Channel 7 will be available to viewers who have pay-TV subscriptions with Cox, Charter and AT&T U-Verse.

However, Time Warner Cable, the biggest cable operator in the region, has not reached a deal with Disney allowing Time Warner customers to use Watch ABC.

The other markets where Watch ABC will be available are Chicago, San Francisco and Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

Because Watch ABC doesn’t have the rights to all the content from local stations, there is some material, including sports and sports highlights, that won’t make the jump online.

The Watch ABC app can be used on numerous mobile devices.

ABC is the first broadcast network to attempt an online version of its linear network. Turner Broadcasting, parent of TNT and TBS, is planning its own online feed of the cable channels starting this summer. Fox is also said to be working on an online version of its broadcast network.
