Katie Holmes returns to Broadway in ‘Dead Accounts’

Katie Holmes made her return to Broadway in “Dead Accounts” as the dark comedy began previews Monday night after a delay caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Holmes drew applause on several occasions during the preview, specifically when the phone she was using onstage broke and she carried on by incorporating the mishap into the scene, People magazine reported.

The play about Wall Street greed is written by “Smash” creator Theresa Rebeck and stars Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz as a wealthy prodigal son named Jack who heads back to his family in Ohio. Holmes plays his skeptical sister, Lorna, who awaits his return in Cincinnati. Jayne Houdyshell plays their mother, and Judy Greer, making her Broadway debut, plays Jack’s wife. Tony winner Jack O’Brien directs.

Holmes, 33, whose high-profile divorce from actor Tom Cruise last summer put her under an intense spotlight, last appeared on Broadway in a 2008 production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons.”

When asked what it was like working with the former “Dawson’s Creek” star, Josh Hamilton, who plays one of Jack’s childhood friends in the play and shares an onstage romance with Holmes’ character, said that she was a “sweetheart.”

The play officially opens Nov. 29 at the Music Box Theatre. Patrons who had tickets to the canceled Saturday preview were promised ice cream.
