Familiar faces and favorites lead L.A. Theatre Works’ 2012-13 season

L.A. Theatre Works, the radio play series recorded in UCLA’s James Bridges Theater, announced a 2012-13 season Tuesday that offers recent Broadway offerings, classics with distinctive casting and less-well known works that will receive new attention.

On the schedule are “Red” by John Logan with Alfred Molina as artist Mark Rothko (which is opening at the Mark Taper Forum in August); “The Nightwatcher,” written and performed by Charlayne Woodard (seen at the Kirk Douglas Theatre last fall); and Stephan Adly Guirgis’ “The Mother.... With the Hat,” with 2011 Broadway cast member Bobby Cannavale, but minus his cast mate Chris Rock.

The season also offers Chekov’s “The Seagull” featuring Calista Flockhart, David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross” led by original cast member Joe Mantegna, Terence McNally’s “Lips Together, Teeth Apart” with Steven Weber and “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” by Ntozake Shange. Jane Kaczmarek will reprise her off-Broadway role in “Kindertransport” by Diane Samuel.

“Cyrano de Bergerac” and a new take on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” also will be staged.

The season of plays, which are recorded live and employ sound effect artists augmenting the actors’ performances but without sets or costumes, begins Sept. 20 with “The Seagull” and runs through July 2013, closing with Anthony Burgess’ translation of “Cyrano.” Tickets range from $15-$49.

Performances will also be broadcast nationally as radio theater (heard locally on KPFK on Sundays) and will be available on demand at the L.A. Theatre Works website. Fortunately, public radio signals are seldom sold out.
