LACMA to honor David Hockney and Martin Scorsese at Art + Film Gala

British artist David Hockney and filmmaker Martin Scorsese will be this year’s honorees at the annual L.A. County Museum of Art’s Art + Film Gala, the museum announced on Monday.

The big-ticket event, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, is a fundraiser for the museum and gathers notable names from the art, music, fashion and film worlds.

Now in its third year, the Art + Film Gala is co-chaired by Leonardo DiCaprio and LACMA trustee Eva Chow, who is married to Mr. Chow restaurateur Michael Chow. Gucci is the presenting sponsor.

A focal point of this year’s gala will be a new collaboration between LACMA and Scorsese’s the Film Foundation as well as the Annenberg Foundation in an effort to preserve four films by French filmmaker Agnès Varda.

“LACMA continues to integrate film into the museum through film-based exhibitions such as the Stanley Kubrick retrospective, “Hans Richter: Encounters” and an upcoming exhibition on the Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa,” LACMA Director Michael Govan said in a statement announcing the gala.

“The 2013 Art + Film Gala celebrates our growing achievements in combining art and film at LACMA and is in alignment with our plans to initiate a program to acquire and restore films, in the same way as we do with other works in our collection.”

Tickets to the gala -- to be catered by Patina -- range from $5,000 and $10,000 for individuals to $50,000 and $100,000 for tables. Last year the evening raised more than $3.5 million for the museum. Proceeds went toward the museum’s efforts to make film more central to its curatorial programming.

A new film installation by Hockney will open at the museum this fall in advance of the November gala.

About Hockney’s work, Govan said: ”Few living artists have as much worldwide renown as David Hockney. From his paintings to his innovative use of photography and more recent use of the iPad as the artist’s tool, Hockney’s imprint on art in the 20th and 21st centuries is indelible. His iconic images of Los Angeles from the 1960s have long been identified with a Southern California of sunny skies, palm trees, lawn sprinklers, and languid sunbathers.”

DiCaprio said in the statement that he was “thrilled” to be honoring Scorsese “and to celebrate his astounding cinematic legacy and leadership in preserving film for future generations.”

Last year’s gala honorees were Ed Ruscha and Stanley Kubrick. The inaugural event honored John Baldessari and Clint Eastwood.
