“Hamilton” is coming to Los Angeles, but local audiences eager to catch the Broadway musical that has become a critical and audience sensation in New York will have to wait until next year.

Producers said on Tuesday that the national tour of “Hamilton” will play at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood for a five-month engagement starting Aug. 11, 2017. No casting has been announced for the tour, which will kick off in spring 2017 in San Francisco.

The musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, gives a contemporary, hip-hop-inflected spin on the story of Alexander Hamilton, the Federalist founding father and first secretary of the Treasury.

In New York, a multicultural cast plays the large roster of historical characters, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Aaron Burr and King George III.

Since it first opened at the Public Theater in New York in early 2015, “Hamilton” has been the talk of the theater world (and drawn bipartisan political support, with President and Michelle Obama, as well as Dick and Lynne Cheney, attending performances).

The show transferred to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre last summer, where it has been playing to sold-out crowds.

“Hamilton” is scheduled to run at the Pantages until Dec. 30, 2017. Additional tour stops haven’t been confirmed, according to a spokesman for the theater.

Miranda starred in the L.A. engagement of his musical “In the Heights” at the Pantages in 2010. The writer-actor has played the “ten-dollar founding father” title role of “Hamilton” at the Public and on Broadway.

Producers of “Hamilton” will have the challenge of filling the Pantages — approximately 2,700 seats, more than twice the capacity of the Richard Rodgers.

The new season at the Pantages will feature other current and recent Broadway productions including “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” (Nov. 1 to 27), “The King and I” (Dec. 13 to Jan. 21, 2017), “Finding Neverland” (Feb. 21 to March 12, 2017) and “An American in Paris” (March 22 to April 9, 2017).

Pop star Deborah Cox will appear in “The Bodyguard” (May 2 to 21, 2017), the musical based on the 1992 Whitney Houston movie. Rounding out the season, “The Book of Mormon” will make a return engagement (May 30 to July 9, 2017) to the Pantages.
