‘Frozen’ musical adaptation bringing back movie’s Oscar-winning writers

The planned stage adaptation of the hit movie “Frozen” will feature some of the same talents that made the Oscar-winning animated feature.

Disney said on Friday that Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the movie and wrote the screenplay, will work on the book for the musical and that the songwriting team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who won Oscars for the song “Let It Go,” will also be working on the show.

Lee shared the award that “Frozen” won for animated feature at last year’s Oscars.

The announcement was made by Thomas Schumacher, who is president and producer of Disney Theatrical Productions. No other details about the forthcoming musical were announced.

Earlier this week, Britain’s Daily Mail reported on some of the details of the “Frozen” musical. The report said that Lee and the Lopezes are working on the stage adaptation and that the musical is aiming to open in 2017, with Alex Timbers possibly directing.

The Daily Mail said that the Lopezes have written a couple of new songs for the stage version.

“Frozen” was a box-office smash when Disney released it in 2013. The animated movie grossed $400 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide.

The planned musical adaptation would be the latest screen-to-stage project from Disney Theatrical, following such musicals as “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.”

Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez will debut their new musical “Up Here” at the La Jolla Playhouse during its 2015-16 season. Timbers will direct the musical about a computer repairman dealing with his over-active imagination.
