Google unveils Nexus 10 tablet, an iPad rival, and Nexus 4 phone
Google on Monday morning announced a new Nexus 10 tablet, a Nexus 4 smartphone and new versions of its Nexus 7 mini tablet that will arrive in time for the holiday season.
The company announced the long-rumored Nexus 4, which is the fourth iteration of its Nexus smartphone. The device is built by LG and features a 4.7-inch screen with a 1,280 by 768 resolution and a 320 pixels per inch density. It features an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front camera. The phone will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.
The Nexus 4 will be available for purchase on Google Play starting on Nov. 13 and from T-Mobile on Nov. 14. Google will sell an 8 GB version of the phone unlocked for $299 and 16 GB for $349. T-Mobile will sell the Nexus 4 to Value Plan customers for $199.99 and 20 monthly payments of $20. Classic Plan customers can get the phone for $199.99 on a new two-year contract.
Google also announced the Nexus 10, a high-end tablet that will compete with the Apple’s 9.7-inch iPad. The Nexus 10 is built by Samsung and features what Google called the “highest resolution” screen on a tablet. That display is 10.05-inches, has a 2,560 by 1,600 resolution and has a magazine-quality 300 pixels per inch density.
Additionally, Google said the Nexus 10 will have nine hours of continuous-use battery life and feature a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front camera. The tablet will also have micro USB and micro HDMI ports.
The Mountain View company said the Nexus 10 will be available for purchase online from Google Play starting Nov. 13. It will cost $399 for a 16 GB version and 32 GB for a $499 model.
Not to be outdone by the iPad mini, Google also announced new pricing and a cellular-connected version of its Nexus 7 mini tablet. Google will no longer sell an 8 GB model, but instead, it has dropped the price of the 16 GB model from $249 to $199. It will now also sell a 32 GB unit for $249. These models are available now while a $299 32 GB model capable of connecting to HSPA+ networks such as AT&T;’s or T-Mobile’s will go on sale on Google Play Nov. 13.
Google was originally expected to announce the new devices Monday at an event scheduled in New York City, but cancelled the event because of Hurricane Sandy.
The product launches were instead announced in a company blog this morning.
