Samsung likely to reveal Galaxy S 4 mini at June 20 event

Samsung has scheduled a press event for June 20, where it is expected to introduce new products for its Android and Windows Phone lineups.

The company Monday sent out an invitation for the event, saying it will take place in London starting at 10 a.m. PDT and be viewable on YouTube. The company is calling the event “Samsung Premier 2013,” and in its invitation, the company specifically notes its Galaxy and Ativ line of devices. Samsung uses its Galaxy brand for its top-of-the-line Android devices while Ativ is the brand it uses for devices running on the Windows Phone operating system.

Among the new devices Samsung is expected to announce is the Galaxy S 4 mini. This device would be a smaller version of its popular flagship phone, the Galaxy S 4, and the followup to last year’s Galaxy S III mini. The GS3 mini was substantially less powerful than its larger counterpart, but it appears Samsung is willing to continue its mini lineup in order to cater to users who want a Samsung smartphone but don’t want a 5-inch screen.

Many believe the company will announce the GS4 mini after Samsung’s U.K. website posted the device online for a short while before removing it (Engadget has a screenshot of the device).

It’s unclear what else Samsung may unveil at the event, but its timing sets up another battle between the South Korean tech giant and rival Apple, which is also likely to debut new products and services in June.

Apple is holding its annual Worldwide Developers Conference a week before Samsung’s event, and the Cupertino tech company typically uses its conference’s keynote to unveil new devices and preview future versions of its software. At this year’s conference, Apple is expected to unveil iOS 7, the next version of its mobile operating system.
