Samsung unveils Galaxy S 4 mini -- a less powerful, more compact phone

After multiple leaks, Samsung went ahead and officially unveiled the Galaxy S 4 mini, a smaller version of its flagship smartphone.

The GS4 mini looks like its larger counterpart but has a lower resolution display, an inferior 8-megapixel camera and limited internal storage.

However, the device does feature the latest version of the Android operating system, many of the same software features as the full-scale GS4, a potent 1.7GHz dual-core processor and a much smaller and compact shape with a 4.3-inch screen.

The GS4 mini is a nice alternative for users who want a Samsung device that’s smaller than the GS4, which has a 5-inch screen, and who don’t care about having the latest specifications on their devices.

Carrying the GS4 brand name alone should help the phone sell. The full-size GS4 has been available for about a month, and already it has done extremely well, selling more than 10 million units worldwide.

For now, Samsung is simply confirming the existence of the device and revealing its specifications. The company is scheduled to further outline details and demonstrate the new smartphone at a June 20 media event in London.

At that time, Samsung is expected to reveal pricing information, which wireless carriers will have the phone and when we can expect to see it available to consumers.
