Samsung mulling Galaxy smartphone with 16-megapixel camera

Samsung builds tech-rich smartphones and last year it made a Internet-connected camera. Now, a report says it plans to combine the two into one device.

SamMobile, a tech news website known for its reliable reports, said Samsung plans to release the Galaxy S 4 Zoom, a “camera phone” that will include a 16-megapixel camera.

That type of camera would be the same as the one used by Samsung on the Galaxy Camera, a point-and-shoot released last year that can also run apps and let users upload their pictures directly to services such as Facebook and Instagram.

The Galaxy Camera is capable of taking higher-quality images than most smartphones available on the market. Now, with the Galaxy S 4 Zoom, it appears Samsung wants to make a smartphone that can take images that are just as good as those taken by point-and-shoot cameras.

But besides its camera, the Galaxy S 4 Zoom will also reportedly have a 4.3-inch screen, run on Android Jelly Bean and have an either dual-core or quad-core processor. SamMobile said the device will have 8 gigabytes of internal storage that can be expanded by up to 64 GB using a microSD memory card. The device will come in black and white.

The report says the Samsung camera phone could begin selling in June or July, but it’s unclear when it would arrive in the U.S.

Samsung could not be reached for comment.
