Netflix mocks Amazon Prime Air with ‘Drone 2 Home’ video

Netflix has taken to YouTube to make fun of the drone delivery program Amazon.com unveiled last year.

In a satirical video, Netflix jokingly announced “Drone 2 Home,” a service that allows the company to deliver DVDs the same day users rent them from the company’s website.

“That’s right. Our fleet of high-tech drones will deliver your disc to you within mere seconds of you adding it to your queue,” Netflix DVD division manager Hank Breeggemann said in the video.

The video shows drones chasing down customers, crashing and exploding, and even delivering movies to users while they’re in the bathroom.

Halfway through the video, Netflix makes a subtle reference to Amazon, which unveiled a drone delivery program called Prime Air late last year on “60 Minutes.” Amazon doesn’t plan on using Prime Air seriously for at least a few more years, but, unlike Netflix, the online retailer was quite serious about using drones.

“Unlike other companies trying to rush unproven technology to market, we have literally spent days working out most of the bugs,” Breeggemann said in the video.

Netflix said the video was created by the company’s DVD.Netflix.com team. One of the team members posted the video on YouTube with the company’s permission.

Amazon and Netflix have competing movie and TV show streaming services, which may explain why the Los Gatos, Calif., company decided to take a jab at its rival.

Amazon could not be reached for comment.
