NBC launches Olympics apps; one will stream every single event

NBC launched two apps Thursday for both iOS and Android, including one that will let select users stream every single event at the Olympics from their mobile devices.

The apps are NBC Olympics Live Extra, which will let you stream, and NBC Olympics, which will only provide highlights. Both are free and available now, but users who want to watch every event from their smartphone or tablet will need a cable, satellite or telco subscription supported by the app.

Live Extra will have more than 3,500 hours of programming and will show video from all events and all 32 sports. That’s excellent news for fans of lesser-covered sports such as badminton or handball.

And for sports for which multiple events are happening at the same time, such as gymnastics or track and field, the app also will provide concurrent streams to let you watch multiple events at the same time.

The example NBC used was watching the long jump and javelin at the same time as part of a track and field event.

Content from NBCUniveral’s channels, including NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo, also will be streamed.

The NBC Olympics app won’t let users stream but is supposed to include highlights. It also will have event schedules and some other content.

The apps will work on iOS devices and select Android devices.

The apps come a day after NBC and Facebook announced a partnership for the Olympics, through which the two companies will be working to promote each others’ content.
