iPhone 5s users gobble up more data than others, report says
Users of the iPhone 5s use more data than any other smartphone owners, according to a report this week.
JDSU’s Location Intelligence Business Unit tracks data usage each year, and for 2013, it found iPhone 5s users demand seven times as much data as users of the iPhone 3G, the study’s benchmark device.
In developing markets, the gap between iPhone 5s data usage and iPhone 3G is even greater. There, iPhone 5s users eat up 20 times more data than the benchmark.

This is the fourth year in a row an Apple device takes the title of using the most data.
“Each new generation of iPhone has resulted in increases in data consumption of between 20% to 40% -- even today when data use is common,” said Michael Flanagan, author of the study, in a statement.
Out of the top 10 devices, Apple accounted for six products. Two of the top 10 devices came from Samsung, one from HTC and the other from Sony.
When it comes to uploading data, HTC Sensation users came out on top in developed markets, loading eight times as much data as iPhone 3G users. In developing markets, the Samsung Galaxy S4 uploaded the most data, 11 times as much as iPhone 3G users.
An interesting discovery by the study was that 0.1% of 4G users consume more than half of all data downloaded from LTE networks. That means the most extreme users are far outpacing more casual 4G users when it comes to data usage.
“The faster the speeds that mobile operators provide, the more consumers swallow it up and demand more,” Flanagan said.
To track usage, JDSU said it reviewed the usage of more than 1 million users during a 24-hour period in developed markets and another 1 million in developing markets. In total, about 1,500 different devices were tracked for the study.
