Apple blogger says iOS 7 running late, will have ‘overhauled’ look

For the last few years, Apple has announced the next version of its mobile operating system during summers. But a report Tuesday says the tech giant could be running late on the development of its next mobile platform, iOS 7.

John Gruber, who blogs about all things Apple, posted that he’s heard the Cupertino company has run into delays, so much so that it transferred some of its desktop operating system developers to work on the next version of the mobile iOS. He said it will likely debut alongside the next iPhone later this year.

But as Gruber points out, this wouldn’t be the first time Apple did this. Back in 2007, Apple disclosed that it had relocated some of its Mac OS engineers to work on its first iPhone so that device could be finished in time.

As a result, the company delayed the release of its operating system named Leopard.

It’s unclear what might be causing Apple to be running late on its development of iOS 7, but it could have something to do with an interface redesign being carried out by Jony Ive, Apple’s chief designer.

Ive has led the company’s hardware designs since the 1990s, but after a shake-up in management last year, he also became responsible for leading the visual design of Apple’s software. Now, iOS 7 will be the first new major Apple software to release since Ive took charge of software interface design.

According to Gruber, iOS 7 will feature a significant interface overhaul, so much so that he says iOS engineers who are allowed to test iOS 7 in the wild are being required to use polarizing filters on their devices so that others nearby can’t get a look at the new visual design.
