Google glitch causes Fresno man to get thousands of unwanted emails

A strange combination of a Google glitch and Friday morning’s Gmail outage appears to have led to a random Fresno man receiving thousands of unwanted emails.

David S. Peck has been getting about 500 emails every hour due to a glitch in Google Search. When users search for “Gmail” and click on “Email,” one of the top links, while logged into their Google accounts, a new email compose box opens up with Peck’s email already entered into the recipient field.

As a result, Peck’s inbox has been receiving thousands of emails with no text on Friday.

The glitch isn’t a new one. SearchEngineLand spotted the error earlier this week, but at that time the glitch displayed the email address for someone other than Peck. It’s unclear when the glitch began displaying Peck’s email address.

After the Gmail outage Friday morning, Peck began receiving email in huge droves, likely as a result of many users searching “Gmail” to figure out why they couldn’t access their messages.

“They’re coming so fast, I want to stop them. I deleted everything last night and woke up this morning and had 1,900 new emails” Peck told TechCrunch. “Only two of them were emails I cared about.”

The glitch does not work when users click on “Email” if they are not logged into their Google account.

Google could not be immediately reached for comment on the situation.
