Frank Gehry to design Facebook’s New York office

After hiring Frank Gehry to design its Menlo Park headquarters’ expansion, Facebook is once again tapping the world-renowned architect for its new New York office that will open next year.

Facebook is relocating its New York office at 335 Madison Ave. to a much larger space at 770 Broadway. The new space, about 100,000 square feet on two floors, is nearly twice the size.

Gehry, who is known for projects spread all over the world including the Los Angeles Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed Facebook’s Menlo Park expansion, which will feature a roof garden that visually blends into the surrounding hillside.

“We were delighted when he agreed to help us build out our new space in New York,” Serkan Piantino, head of Facebook New York’s engineering team, said in a post. “It will share many of the features of our headquarters, but will be distinctly Big Apple in design and speak to the unique experience of working in a place like Manhattan.”

Gehry said his experience working with Facebook has been “fantastic” and said he is thrilled to be working on the company’s upcoming New York office.

“We are looking forward to creating a space that speaks to the values of Facebook and allows them to continue to do their best work,” he said in a statement.

Don’t expect another roof garden at Facebook’s upcoming New York office, but like the building Gehry designed for Menlo Park, the New York office will feature a large open space for the company’s employees. Facebook’s co-founder is known for disliking offices -- he sits out in an open cubicle with his staff.
