CES 2014 live: Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer touts new digital services

LAS VEGAS -- Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer used the occasion of making the CES keynote address Tuesday to announce several new initiatives for the company, including a new smartphone app, digital magazines and targeted ads on its Tumble blogging site.

The biggest may have been Yahoo News Digest, a smartphone app unveiled by teen computer prodigy Nick D’Aloisio. The app sends users two daily digests filled with personalized news stories.

Mayer also unveiled Yahoo Food and Yahoo Tech, new websites that present news in a design resembling a magazine. The new sites will featured sponsored articles.

Additionally, David Karp, creator and head of Tumblr, took the stage to announce Tumblr ads will now be powered by Yahoo Advertising. That will allow advertisers to better target their ads to specific types of users.

CES officially kicked off Tuesday in Las Vegas, and gadget news began to overtake the fireworks of celebs walking off stage or CEOs getting kicked out of parties.

Samsung announced four new Android tablets that have been optimized for users who want to be able to get work done on their devices.

The tablets are the Samsung Galaxy TabPro -- available in 12.2-, 10.1- and 8.4-inch screen sizes -- and the 12.2-inch Galaxy NotePro, which includes a stylus. For the Pro tablets, Samsung created a new interface design called Magazine UX that resembles the look of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system.

To optimize the tablets for productivity, Samsung has made it possible for users to run as many as four apps on the screen at the same time. Currently, there are only about 36 apps that can do this, but Samsung said developers can easily enable their apps to take advantage of the feature.

Besides multitasking, Samsung has also redesigned the tablet’s on-screen keyboards to resemble the physical keyboards that are used with Windows computers. That means the keyboards include the arrow keys and a control button, which users can tap to enable shortcuts they are already familiar with, such as the “control” key and the letter “c” to copy text.

The new tablets will release globally in the first quarter of 2014. No word on pricing.

On Monday’s press day, CES highlights included news conferences from some of the biggest names in tech. In non-gadget news, there was movie director Michael Bay walking off the stage in a huff at a Samsung news conference. And T-Mobile’s chief executive getting kicked out of rival AT&T’s event.

T-Mobile U.S. CEO John Legere -- whose company has been eating into AT&T’s wireless-market share -- showed up at the AT&T trade-show party and was escorted out by security. He tweeted about the incident Tuesday morning.
