Apple designer Jony Ive’s iOS redesign mocked in new Tumblr blog
Apple this week unveiled the first major design overhaul for the iPhone operating system, and many were not impressed with the new look.
Despite being led by Jony Ive, who has been Apple’s hardware design chief since the 1990s, the new look found in iOS 7 has been criticized by many in the design community, and now a new Tumblr blog that pokes fun at the overhaul has hit the Web.
Jony Ive Redesigns Things, the Tumblr blog, posts mockups made by users around the Web of familiar objects redesigned the Ive way. The humorous blog, for example, features a redesigned U.S. flag, a one-dollar bill and even the Mona Lisa.

The posts poke fun at the use of gradients and bright neon colors used throughout iOS 7, which some on Twitter say look cartoon-like and feminine.
The blog was started by Los Angeles website and app designer Sasha Agapov, who jokingly posted a design of what Google redesign by Ive would look like on Dribble, an online design community.
“Then it just kind of took off,” Agapov said in an email. “People started designing funny mock-ups of stuff as if designed by Jonathan Ive, and I just decided to create a place to store all the good stuff inspired by the new iOS design.”
Agapov, who has been an iPhone user since the first version came out, said he has admired Apple and Ive’s designs for years but was shocked by the new look of iOS 7.
“My Apple-loving heart was broken a bit,” he wrote. “The colors and the icons used in iOS 7 look somewhat weird if you think that was made by the guys at Apple: icons are inconsistent and sometimes awkward and the colors and gradients are a bit too bright in my opinion.”
Agapov said he has updated his device to iOS 7 and likes the new features on the platform. As for Ive’s new design, he said he will withhold judgment until iOS 7 has its official release to all users this fall.
“Maybe it’s too early to judge his software design abilities, since the official release of iOS 7 is scheduled for this fall, but from what I saw at WWDC, it seems like the visual part of Apple’s software might change to something I wouldn’t want to use,” Agapov wrote.
