Built for actor-producer Alan Ladd and his first wife, Sue Carol, this English country estate in tony Holmby Hills saw a change of course in the early design phase.

Architect Wallace Neff was originally commissioned to build a Hawaiian modern-style residence on the 1.2-acre grounds. However, after Ladd and Carol became disenchanted with the plans, Gerard Colcord was brought in to complete the single-story home in a more traditional style.

Grand-scale formal rooms and hand-carved details are among features of the 1949 design. A bomb shelter Ladd had built during the Cold War now serves as a wine cellar.
