Goldwyn Estate, Madonna’s former digs among L.A.’s priciest home sales

The storied home of a pioneering film family, the former residence of a pop star and newly built estates in Pacific Palisades and Arcadia were among the most expensive real estate transactions in the Greater Los Angeles area this week.

$25 million -- Beverly Hills

In the 1200 block of Laurel Lane, a home built for film pioneer Samuel Goldwyn Sr. -- and later owned by his son, film producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. -- sold after coming to market in April for $32 million.

Set on two acres, the estate centers on a Georgian-inspired Traditional designed by architect Douglas Honnold and completed in 1934. Within the 11,000 square feet of living space is a formal dining room, a paneled 35-millimeter screening room, six bedrooms and five bathrooms.

Rose gardens, rolling lawns, a tennis court and a swimming pool with a pool house make up the grounds.

Goldwyn Sr., who died in 1974 at 94, mortgaged the Beverly Hills home numerous times to finance his movies. His film “The Best Years of Our Lives” won an Oscar for best picture in 1946.

Goldwyn Jr., whose credits include “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (2013), “Master and Commander” (2003) and “Mystic Pizza” (1988), died in January at 88.

Joyce Rey and Stacy Gottula of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage were the co-listing agents. Loren Judd and Michael Cain, also of Coldwell Banker, represented the buyer.

$19 million -- Beverly Hills

Billionaire Russell Weiner, who founded the company behind Rockstar energy drinks, paid $19 million for a 1.25-acre estate in the 9000 block of Sunset Boulevard. The home, once owned by pop icon Madonna, had been listed at $27.995 million.

Accessed by a 500-foot tree-lined drive, the walled and gated compound has a nine-bedroom main house, two guesthouses, a swimming pool and a north-south tennis court.

Rebuilt and expanded by Madonna during her decade of ownership, some 17,000 square feet of living space includes two living rooms, a two-story dining room, two offices, a screening room and an art studio. There are nine bedrooms and 15 bathrooms in all.

Kurt Rappaport and Andrew Meyers of Westside Estate Agency were the listing agents, according to the Multiple Listing Service.

Rappaport also represented the buyer.

$12.7 million -- Pacific Palisades

A newly built estate that replaced the Kingsley Residence, a Midcentury Modern-style home designed by Case Study architect J.R. Davidson, sold in the 1600 block of Amalfi Drive for $199,000 less than the asking price.

Entered through a front garden with a waterfall feature, the Cape Cod-inspired Traditional sits on about half an acre in the Palisades Riviera area with city and ocean views.

Two floors of living space feature a chandelier-topped foyer, large formal areas, a glass-enclosed wine cellar, an elevator and a chef’s kitchen with a wide center island. A home theater fashioned in Old Hollywood style has stadium seating, suede panels and a 130-foot screen.

Seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms are within the 10,500 square feet of space.

$9.5 million -- Arcadia

A newly built French-style home in the 800 block of Fallen Leaf Road sold after relisting in June for $9.99 million.

A massive domed foyer sets the stage for the Robert Tong-designed residence, set on 1.13 acres in the Upper Rancho area. Among amenities are chef and wok kitchens, a poker room, a home theater and a gym with a sauna.

The 12,619 square feet of living space has seven bedrooms and 9.5 bathrooms. A separate pool house and cabana combine for an additional 1,450 square feet of space.

King Chang of Treeline Realty & Investment was the listing agent. Lina To of Southland Realty Company represented the buyer.

$7.775 million -- Westwood

Marketed as a development opportunity, a 1.12-acre property in the 600 block of Comstock Avenue sold for about $775,000 over the asking price.

A 1940s Tudor-style home with six bedrooms and 9.5 bathrooms, a swimming pool and spa and a motor court currently makes up the grounds.

Blair Chang of the Agency was the listing agent. Robert Friedman of Mortgage Boutique Inc. represented the buyer.

$7,572,500 -- Beverly Hills

A three-bedroom, 2,820-square-foot condominium at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills sold in under a month for about $420,000 less than the asking price.

Interiors featuring 10-foot ceilings and parquet wood floors include an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, a study and a separate laundry room. There are fireplaces in the master bedroom and living.

Three parking spaces were included with the unit.

$6.225 million -- La Cañada Flintridge

A Spanish Colonial Revival-style home in the 1600 block of Fairmount Avenue sold after coming to market in June for $6.595 million. It previously went for $4.15 million in 2011, records show.

Built by Welby H. Hudson for J.C. Penney executive Chauncey H. McKellips in 1929, the two-story home is distinguished by such details as elaborate tiled floors, hand-painted ceilings and arched windows and doors embellished in wrought iron work.

A total of 10,409 square feet of living space has five bedrooms and 6.75 bathrooms.

Outdoors, grounds of nearly two acres contain rolling lawns, fountains and a swimming pool and spa. A circular motor court with a fountain feature marks the entrance to the home.

These are among the top residential real estate sales reported on the combined L.A./Westside Multiple Listing Service for the period beginning Aug. 30 and ending Sept. 5.
