Onetime home of silent film star Mae Murray is for sale in Hollywood Hills

A Hollywood Hills home once owned by silent film star Mae Murray, popularly known during her time as “the girl with the bee-stung lips,” has come to market for $1.749 million.

Designed in Italian Revival style and built in 1924, the turreted three-story retains the air of a bygone era. Period details include arched doorways, vintage fixtures and Saltillo tile and hardwood floors. A handsome formal living roof features a barrel roll ceiling, a Batchelder tile fireplace and a wall of Palladian windows decorated with stained glass.

A formal dining room, a center-island kitchen, an office/den, four bedrooms and four bathrooms also lie within nearly 3,300 square feet of living space. A breakfast nook sits off the kitchen beneath a row of skylights.

Outdoors, there are multiple patios, including a rooftop terrace with a view extending from the downtown cityscape to the ocean. Heart-shaped stepping stones, purportedly given to Murray by an ardent suitor, mark the entrance to the home.

The house previously sold in 1997 for $530,000, and four years before that for $437,000, records show.

Originally discovered on Broadway, Murray, who died in 1965 at 79, made her silent film debut in 1916 in “To Have and to Hold.” She would go on to make more than 40 films, including “The Delicious Little Devil” (1919) and “The Gilded Lily.” (1921).
