John Gilbert Getty sells Los Feliz home for $8.3 million
John Gilbert Getty of the J. Paul Getty oil family has sold his landmark house in Los Feliz for $8.3 million.
Called the Castle, the 1924 home was designed by A.F. Leicht, known for his symbolic designs and distinctive results. Among his works were evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson’s Angelus Temple and about two dozen homes in Los Feliz and Hollywood Hills.
The house has a storied history, having been home to such notables as singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, pop artist Andy Warhol, musician Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, actor John Phillip Law and, before Getty, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Set on 1.7 acres, the house combines Art Deco, Moderne, Spanish, Freemason and Assyrian styles. The entry is formed around a pentagram. Multilevel balconies were designed for singers and actors to perform unseen.
A cathedral-ceilinged living room, a formal dining room, a den, a renovated kitchen, four bedrooms and four bathrooms are contained within the 5,582 square feet, tax records show.
A tower room leads up to a roof deck with 360 views.
John Getty is the son of Ann and Gordon Getty, who was the oil tycoon’s fourth child.
The property had been marketed as a pocket listing for $8.9 million. The $8.3 million sale is one of the highest ever for Los Feliz.
Barry Sloane and Marc Silver of Sotheby’s International Realty handled the deal, according to agents not authorized to comment on the off-market transaction.
