Historic Harvey Mudd estate in Beverly Hills sells for $14.7 million
A Beverly Hills estate named for mining engineer Harvey Mudd and once owned by Oscar-winning actor Martin Landau has sold for $14.7 million in a deal completed outside the Multiple Listing Service.
The who’s who of magnates, philanthropists and other notables to have owned the property begins with a Mason jar manufacturer, who commissioned noted architect Elmer Grey to build the Country English-style estate in 1922.
The house was acquired by philanthropists Harvey and Mildred Mudd in 1925. The couple, for whom the Harvey Mudd College in Claremont is named, lived there until 1958.
Oil magnate Harry S. Rothschild, founder of Rothschild Oil Co. and Powerine Oil Company, came to own the property in the late 1960s, eventually selling it to Martin Landau and his wife, Emmy-winning actress Barbara Bain.
In 1991, Landau and Bain sold the estate to film producer Jack Rapke, former co-chairman of Creative Artists Agency, and his wife, Sandi, for $2.425 million.
The property has changed hands twice since then, most recently for $6.25 million in 2010.
Sitting on an acre of manicured grounds, the stately residence is reached by a gated and winding drive.
Including a guest studio, the home has nearly 11,000 square feet of living space with seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two powder rooms. Details of note include hand-carved wood paneling and woodwork, stone pillars and delicate stenciled ceilings.
A two-story entry features stained glass windows and a sparkling chandelier, and a wine cellar is paired with separate game and tasting rooms. Formal living and dining rooms, a conservatory, a library, a sunroom and an updated kitchen are among the other spaces.
Various terraces, patios, an aviary and a swimming pool with a waterfall feature fill the grounds. A circular motor court sits off the entrance to the home.
The property was most recently up for sale two years ago for $15.995 million, records show. It had been listed for $22.995 million in 2013.
Victoria Risko of Sotheby’s International Realty and Stephen Resnick and Jonathan Nash of Hilton and Hyland, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, represented the seller in the transaction.
