‘Downton Abbey’ dowager’s house and acreage sells in Surrey, England

Finally, a chapter in “Downton Abbey” history in which no one dies.

Twelve weeks after coming on the market, the Surrey house used to portray the home of actress Maggie Smith’s character, Lady Violet Crawley, found a buyer and recently closed along with several adjacent properties for nearly $9 million.

Known as Dower House on the TV series, it was built around 1686. A heavy timber staircase and several fireplaces are remnants from an earlier palace on the site.

The pitched-roof and gabled three-story contains four reception or public rooms and eight bedrooms.

The stone-walled house, which was listed at about $6.1 million, sold with three other houses on four additional lots that were offered separately.

The 19-acre Byfleet Manor estate dates to the 7th century and has been owned or used by such royals as Kings Edward I and II, Henry VII and Queen Elizabeth I.

The series “Poirot” and “Cranford” and the film “Into the Woods.” have also used the estate as a location.

“Downton Abbey,” a British period drama set around the lives of a landed family in the early 20th century, is set to air its sixth and final season in the U.S. starting in January.
