Digg details plans for Google Reader replacement

Digg has received more than 800 comments on a blog that the social news website posted last week to announce it would develop a replacement for Google Reader, which is slated to shut down July 1.

“That’s more than we received when we told the world we were rebuilding Digg itself,” the New York-based company said. “It’s also proof that Google Reader users (and RSS devotees in general) are rabid information addicts with strong opinions.”

Users want Digg to keep the reader simple, make it fast, synchronize over multiple devices and make it easy to import data from Google Reader accounts, the site said Monday.

The Digg team hasn’t set an exact release date for its RSS reader, but it is giving impression that it wants to have the new service ready by the time Google Reader closes. In order to have the new reader up as fast as possible, Digg said it is looking for more developers to join the effort.

Users can join an email list in order to stay informed on the latest about the Digg reader. Digg posted a link for users to sign up for the list that includes a countdown for when Google Reader will shut down. Just 97 days to go.
