Everything you need to know from Apple’s iPhone event
As expected, Apple unveiled new versions of the popular iPhone on Tuesday morning, but the tech giant also made a handful of other announcements. Here’s everything you need to know.
The iPhone 5S
The new high-end iPhone looks a lot like its predecessor, the iPhone 5, but inside, there’s a few notable changes. The iPhone 5S runs on an improved A7 processor, its camera has a better flash and more features, and the device now includes a fingerprint scanner for security.
The iPhone 5S comes in black, white or gold color options. It goes on sale Sept. 20 for $199 with 16 GB of storage on contract, $299 with 32 GB or $399 with 64 GB.
The iPhone 5C
Apple introduced a low-cost version of the iPhone called the iPhone 5C. The new device features a plastic shell and comes in five different colors: blue, green, pink, yellow and white.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 5C start Friday, and it will be available in stores. Sept. 20. The iPhone 5C is available with 16 GB of storage for $99 on contract or 32 GB for $199. Customers can also buy a colorful Apple case for $29.
iPhone 4S
Apple is killing off the iPhone 5, but the iPhone 4S is still sticking around. The company said users can get the iPhone 4S with 8 GB of storage for free with a two-year contract. It’s available for purchase at that price now.
iOS 7
Prior to releasing new iPhones, Apple will roll out iOS 7, the latest version of its mobile software. IOS 7 features a completely new interface and a numerous new features, including iTunes Radio, a new Control Center and improvements to the Siri voice assistant.
It will be available Sept. 18 for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini and the fifth generation iPod touch.
iWork apps come free with new devices
Apple also announced it will include its productivity apps for free with the purchase of new iOS devices. That includes Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie and iPhoto. Currently, Apple charges $9.99 for Pages, Keynote and Numbers, and $4.99 for iMovie and iPhoto. Starting Sept. 18, prices will change.
