Pre-orders to start for Ford GT Supercar

Perhaps inspired by the recent record-breaking deposits for the Tesla Model 3, Ford said it would take online applications for its planned “ultra-high-performance” Ford GT Supercar.

They won’t be hitting Tesla-like numbers of 300,000 or more. This Ford GT will be limited to 250 cars a year, and orders are only being taken for two production years, so no more than 500 orders will be taken.

The rare supercar will also be a little more expensive than the Model 3, for which wanna-be owners deposited $1,000 against an expected $35,000 minimum purchase price.

The GT will start in the “mid-$400,000s,” Ford says, excluding options, extras and destination and delivery fees.

Online ordering begins April 12 at 9:01 p.m. PDT and ends May 12 at 8:59 p.m. PDT.

A concierge-type online ordering experience, for what Ford calls “accepted applicants,” will allow prospective GT owners to use an online configurator to choose from eight exterior colors and seven stripe colors, and to select wheels and interior design themes.

Under the hood, in this mid-engined, carbon-fiber street racer, they’ll get Ford’s twin-turbocharged, 600-plus-horsepower, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, mated to a seven-speed, paddle-shift automatic transmission.

It might be even faster than a Model 3.

The new car won’t be appearing just in showrooms or rich people’s driveways. Fifty years after making its debut at Le Mans -- and crushing the Ferrari competition -- the racing legend has returned to the track. It can be seen in action this weekend at the 42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and next month at the Mazda Raceway in Laguna Seca, and this summer will once again compete at Le Mans.
