Mazda recalls 161,000 sedans for faulty door latch

Mazda is recalling more than 160,000 sedans to fix a defect that can cause the door to open while the car is moving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday that 161,400 Mazda 6 sedans from the 2009-2013 model years were affected.

At issue are a series of mounting screws in the door latches. The screws can come loose, causing the latch to fail to hold the door closed properly. This can cause the door to open inadvertently while the car is in motion, NHTSA said.

No accident or injuries have been reported as a result of this issue, according to Mazda spokesperson Beverly Braga.

Mazda dealers will fix the screws with an adhesive free of charge, the safety agency said. The recall will begin Oct. 18.
