George R.R. Martin slams Donald Trump as ‘unfit to lead this nation’

“A Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin voted early in New Mexico last week, and he left no doubt about his choice: He’s with her.

In a series of posts on his blog (titled Not a Blog) the bestselling novelist tore into Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, writing, “In my lifetime, there has never been a presidential candidate more unfit to lead this nation.”

Martin believes that Hillary Clinton’s negative ads targeting Trump are effective because they feature clips of Trump’s frequently explosive comments.

“Yes, he mocked a disabled reporter. There he is, doing it,” Martin wrote. “Yes, he said he wants to ban all Muslims from entering the US. Here, see the clip.”

Martin’s book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” forms the basis for the HBO series “Game of Thrones.” The stories have depicted many kinds of leaders: wavering, sadistic, ambitious, valiant, venal, casual, permissive, generous, seditious, unrelenting, bloodthirsty and corrupt. More often than not, people in power act badly, while those on the outside — with purer intent — behave slightly less badly.

Martin owns the Cocteau Cinema in Santa Fe, which is screening the anti-Trump documentary “Michael Moore in TrumpLand.” He also promised to sweeten the deal.

“We want to do our own part in encouraging everyone to get out and vote, so from now until November 9 anyone who turns up at the Jean Cocteau Cinema with one of those stickers will get a FREE POPCORN,” Martin wrote. “No charge for butter, or the topping of your choice. And we do have the best popcorn in town, so...”

In a post on Sunday, Martin confessed that election anxiety had gotten to him.

“I am not sleeping well, and I think I check 538 about three dozen times a day, hoping for some good news,” he wrote. “Come Tuesday night, I will either be relieved or suicidal. I think I speak for a lot of Americans about that as well.”

Martin isn’t just confining his support for Clinton to his blog. On Saturday, the Hillary for New Mexico Twitter account posted a picture of the author speaking to a group of Clinton volunteers in Santa Fe.

In the photo, Martin is wearing one of his favored newsboy caps, and a blue Hillary Clinton button affixed to his trademark suspenders.
