Britney Spears to write a novel? Really, y’all?

Britney Spears is in talks to write a novel. Really? Really.

That’s according to the Hollywood Reporter, which writes, “That’s right, Britney Spears is close to signing a book deal ... with plans to write a novel.... The story would incorporate fictionalized versions of her own experiences.”

Spears would be following in the high-heeled footsteps of Lauren Conrad, whose novel “L.A. Candy” had commonalities with her own life. And of Bethenny Frankel, known for being on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New York City” and founding the Skinny Girl line of drinks, whose novel “Skinnydipping” is about a woman entrepreneur who finds fame on a reality-television show. Conrad’s novel and Frankel’s novel were both bestsellers.

Not every celebrity’s novel-writing efforts have been as successful. Nicole Polizzi, a.k.a. Snooki from “Jersey Shore,” may have been in all the tabloids, but her novel, “A Shore Thing,” failed to find much of an audience.

Britney’s fame has been longer lasting than Snooki’s, of course, and her life — if she were to mine it for her fiction — is much more interesting. She was a child star, a sexy pop star, made a couple of bad marriages, became a public train wreck, and then got put back together again as a sexy pop star. Now she’s a judge on “The X Factor.”

At some level, Britney’s life is a case of truth being stranger than fiction. Why read a novel about a pop star having a public breakdown when we all saw the photos of Britney shaving her head? And her return to normalcy — isn’t that a near miraculous redemption?

There’s nothing (other than the current rumor) that says Britney would have to write a novel based on her own life. Perhaps she’s got a “Game of Thrones”-type saga up her stylish sleeve.
