For the record - May 5, 2010
John Basilone: An article in Monday’s Calendar section about John Basilone, whose death on Iwo Jima was marked on the HBO series “The Pacific,” described him as a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. The medal, though authorized by Congress, is properly referred to as the Medal of Honor.
Desalination plant: An article in Saturday’s LATExtra section about a water desalination plant in Yuma, Ariz., reported that the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California supplies 1.5 billion gallons of water per year to its customers. That figure, given by the Bureau of Reclamation, is the amount provided daily, according to MWD spokesman Bob Muir.
National monuments: In a May 2 Travel section article about national monuments, an item on the Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana referred to the Army’s 7th Calvary. It should have said Cavalry. Also, some references to the Matanzas River and Ft. Matanzas in Florida, where the Spanish killed 250 French Huguenots in 1565, misspelled the name as Mantanzas.
Jewelry repair: In Sunday’s Image section, a photo caption with an article about jewelry repair referred to a 3.8 karat diamond ring. The correct term is carat.
