An evacuation order was issued for thousands and Texas A&M; University closed as a fire burned at a chemical plant and warehouse that processes explosive ammonium nitrate.
Black smoke settled over Bryan after the fire started about noon at the El Dorado Chemical Co., which blends and packages fertilizer and other chemicals -- including ammonium nitrate, which can be used to make explosives.
The fire was under control by evening, and the evacuation order was lifted for a majority of the city, a fire official said.
