Protesters stormed the wreckage of a collapsed school to demand rescuers speed up the search for victims. At least 88 students and adults died in the collapse of the College La Promesse in a slum near Port-au-Prince.

Rescuers included a crew from Virginia, an eight-person military team from the U.S. Southern Command, and French firefighters from Martinique.

About 100 men rushed the unstable pile, hammering at debris and trying to pull down a massive concrete slab that firefighters worried could trigger a second collapse. Police and U.N. peacekeepers in riot gear drove the men away, but they returned and threw rocks.

Tensions eased after authorities let several dozen local people help clear rubble under U.N. supervision.
