Repairs to disrupt traffic along I-5
The California Department of Transportation launched an ambitious effort Friday to fix a troubled mile-long section of Interstate 5, a six-week construction project that will close the freeway for days at a time.
Authorities braced for huge traffic snarls because of the project, dubbed “The Big Fix.”
Workers from the construction firm C.C. Myers will repair the roadbed and drainage system in what’s known as the “boat section,” a swath of freeway that dips below the level of the Sacramento River west of downtown.
Under the tentative schedule, the northbound lanes will be closed until June 9, and again from June 26 through July 3. The southbound lanes will close June 13-23 and July 8-15.
City officials are urging downtown workers to carpool or switch to public transit.
Motorists passing through Sacramento north or south on I-5 will detour onto alternative freeways to the west.
