Overton shares lead with a strong finish
Jeff Overton closed his five-under-par 67 on Friday with consecutive birdies to move to 12-under 132 and share of the lead with Steve Marino (67) and veteran John Huston (66) after the second round of the Wyndham Championship at Greensboro, N.C.
Anders Hansen (64), Tim Petrovic (65), Craig Kanada (65), Carl Pettersson (67) and Greg Kraft (67) were one stroke back. Steve Wheatcroft (66) and Nathan Green (66) were two strokes behind the leaders.
First-round leader Will MacKenzie shot a 71 and was at nine under, three behind.
Defending champion Davis Love III was recovering in Georgia after a procedure to treat a kidney stone.
As expected, Tiger Woods will skip the first event of the FedEx Cup playoff series, the Barclays next week at Westchester Country Club, saying he was worn out from consecutive victories at Firestone and Southern Hills.
Hall of Famer Juli Inkster shot a five-under 66 for a share of the second-round lead in the Canadian Women’s Open at Edmonton.
The 47-year-old Inkster, a 31-time winner on the LPGA Tour, matched South Korea’s Shi Hyun Ahn (67) at eight-under 134 on the Royal Mayfair course.
Ahn had a hole in one on the 157-yard 16th. “I hit a six-iron, a high draw shot and it went in,” she said.
Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa (65), Kimberly Hall (67) and first-round leader Laura Diaz (70) were one behind the co-leaders. Michelle Wie missed the cut by four shots, following her opening 75 with a 74.
David Edwards shot a seven-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Tradition, a Champions Tour major.
Edwards had a 12-under 132 total on the 7,489-yard Crosswater Golf Club course in Sunriver, Ore.
Mark McNulty was 10 under after a 68, with Keith Fergus eight under after a 66.
“We’re only halfway there,” Fergus said.
