Zambrano will stay with Cubs

Carlos Zambrano’s long wait paid off. The Chicago Cubs’ ace right-hander agreed Friday to a $91.5-million, five-year contract extension that features a 2013 option that could make the deal worth $110.75 million over six seasons.

Zambrano skipped a shot at free agency and its lucrative payday to stay with the only club for which he has played.

The 26-year-old Zambrano, a two-time All-Star, is 14-9 with a 3.86 earned-run average this season and 78-51 in his big league career.

His deal’s $18.3-million average annual value is the highest for a pitcher with a multiyear contract and No. 5 overall behind Roger Clemens ($28 million), Alex Rodriguez ($25.2 million), Manny Ramirez ($20 million) and Derek Jeter ($18.9 million).

Baltimore Orioles closer Chris Ray is expected to be sidelined the entire 2008 season after having major surgery on his right elbow. He underwent the Tommy John procedure on Thursday, the team announced.

Rookie right-hander Tim Lincecum was put on the bereavement list by the San Francisco Giants, clearing the way for infielder Rich Aurilia to return from the 15-day disabled list. Aurilia was sidelined Aug. 2 because of a strained right hamstring.

The Boston Red Sox traded outfielder Wily Mo Pena to the Washington Nationals for a player to be named.

Jose Offerman’s suspension for a bat attack will remain in effect until his legal case is resolved, the independent Atlantic League ruled.

Offerman, of the Long Island Ducks, hit the opposing catcher and pitcher Tuesday night at Bridgeport.

The former Dodgers shortstop was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree assault. He is due back in a Connecticut court on Aug. 23.
