Vitamins don’t aid women’s hearts
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Middle-age women at risk for heart disease received little benefit from taking vitamins C and E or beta carotene, researchers said this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
Scientists had previously thought that these antioxidants benefited the heart by counteracting compounds known as free radicals, which can damage artery linings, encourage blood clots and alter the function of blood vessels. The nine-year study involved more than 8,000 women, average age 61.
