Philadelphia didn’t wait long to send Donovan McNabb a message.

With the fourth pick of the second round, the Eagles selected Houston’s Kevin Kolb, presumably letting McNabb know the quarterback job could be up for grabs -- or at least that he’ll have some competition. McNabb is coming off a knee injury that cut short his 2006 season.

The Eagles weren’t the only team thinking quarterback in the second round. Miami, which passed on Brady Quinn earlier, selected Brigham Young’s John Beck with the 40th pick. Three spots later, Detroit grabbed Michigan State’s Drew Stanton.

A lot of pre-draft buzz surrounded Beck, 25, who went on a three-year Mormon mission before enrolling at Brigham Young. He led the Cougars to a 6-0 record at home last season, and directed an offense that averaged 47.2 points in those games.

Also selected in the second round were USC’s top three prospects: receiver Dwayne Jarrett and center Ryan Kalil by Carolina, and receiver Steve Smith by the New York Giants.

Two Michigan players were among projected first-round prospects who tumbled: defensive tackle Alan Branch, who went to Arizona, and linebacker David Harris, chosen by the New York Jets.

Ten of the first 12 picks in the second round were the result of trades.
