Candidate calls Ortega a return to civil-war past

CHINANDEGA, NICARAGUA — Nicaragua’s leading conservative presidential candidate on Sunday accused Daniel Ortega, a rival and former president, of representing a return to civil-war violence, and urged voters to block his bid for office.
Eduardo Montealegre said voting for Ortega next Sunday would send Nicaragua back to its painful past.
Ortega, whose Sandinista government fought a decade-long civil war against U.S.-backed Contra rebels, leads opinion polls in his third attempt at a comeback since he was ousted from power in 1990.
