Time to order heritage birds
Heritage turkeys are the flavorful descendants of the first breeds domesticated in the United States. They’re not widely available and are more expensive than regular broad-breast or crossbred turkeys.
You can order a fresh heritage turkey for Thanksgiving, delivered via FedEx to arrive Tuesday, Nov. 21, from Heritage Foods USA, the marketing arm of Slow Food USA. Turkeys are available in eight size categories. All prices include shipping. Price examples: 8- to 10-pound turkey, $119; 14.1- to 16-pound turkey, $159; 16.1- to 18-pound turkey, $169; 22.1 pounds and over, $209. Mary’s Free-Range Turkey of Fresno no longer accepts retail orders online, but its fresh heritage birds are available for order, beginning Nov. 1, at select Bristol Farms stores (check with your local store or visit www.bristolfarms.com for locations). While supplies last; $5.99 a pound.
