Sanchez Probe Continues

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office has received some results from a police investigation involving USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, even as detectives continue to work the case, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Sanchez, 19, was arrested April 26 after a female USC student told police he had sexually assaulted her. Sanchez is free on $200,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on May 17.

USC has placed Sanchez on “interim suspension,” which precludes him from attending classes or taking part in campus activities or events. But a source close to the football program said Wednesday that Sanchez would be allowed to take his final exams.

After Sanchez’s arrest, Athletic Director Mike Garrett sent a memo to all USC coaches instructing them to address behavior issues with their athletes, something football players said Coach Pete Carroll did in a team meeting Monday.

The USC football program is also connected to two other ongoing investigations. The Pacific 10 Conference and NCAA are looking into the relationship between Reggie Bush’s family and New Era Sports & Entertainment, a fledgling marketing company that tried unsuccessfully to sign Bush. An attorney representing New Era’s founders said Wednesday that he expects investigators will meet with one of his clients this week.

And USC’s compliance office is investigating whether rules were broken when the father of former quarterback Matt Leinart paid for part of an apartment his son shared with receiver Dwayne Jarrett.

Jarrett has college eligibility remaining and could miss a portion of next season if it is determined an NCAA infraction occurred. USC and Bush could also face sanctions, including forfeiting games and, perhaps, the running back’s Heisman Trophy.
