Stanford Defeats California Again

Stanford won its third consecutive game and sixth in a row over archrival California with a 75-61 victory Friday night in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Palo Alto.

Matt Haryasz had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal, which beat the Golden Bears in Maples Pavilion for the 13th consecutive time for its first three-game winning streak of the season. It’s also Stanford’s first time above .500 in six weeks.

The biggest difference in the game was free-throw shooting -- Stanford made 17 of 19 and California (9-5, 3-2) went a season-worst 11 of 24.

Leon Powe had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears, but he made only five of 11 free-throw attempts.

California began the week tied for first place in the Pac-10 and was trying to win its first three conference road games for the first time since Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell led the Golden Bears in 1957.

Cal went on a 10-4 run to get to within 53-51 at 9:51. Stanford’s Tim Morris stole the ball from Ayinde Ubaka and had a four-on-one but missed the layup. Dan Grunfeld got the rebound and was fouled, making both free throws.

Then Powe got whistled for an offensive foul for pushing off at the other end and Stanford pulled away.

The Cardinal (7-6 overall, 3-2 Pac-10), which was picked to finish second in the conference and started the season ranked No. 13, has won five of its last seven and six in a row at Maples Pavilion.

In women’s top-25 games:

No. 19 Temple 61, Fordham 47 -- The Owls (11-4, 3-1) won the Atlantic 10 Conference game at Philadelphia after having their 24-game league winning streak end with a loss Wednesday night against George Washington.

In beating the Rams (6-8, 1-2) for the 12th consecutive time, they opened the game with 10 consecutive points and led at halftime, 32-18.

No. 25 North Carolina State 73, Virginia 63 -- The Wolfpack (11-4, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a 17-3 run early in the second half at Charlottesville, Va., to pull away from the Cavaliers (12-3, 0-2), who had their six-game home winning streak end.

Washington guard Kayla Burt will not play for the Huskies today in Seattle against USC after her heart defibrillator activated during Thursday night’s game against UCLA.

The school said Burt was released from the hospital Friday after testing and observation to determine what triggered the defibrillator to go off during a timeout in the first half of a 96-75 victory over the Bruins.
