Allen’s Defense Leads the Chiefs

Jared Allen had a huge day against Washington, with three sacks and two recovered fumbles.

But it was the play he didn’t get credit for that his teammates said was the biggest of the game. Sammy Knight insists that Allen created the fumble that the defensive back returned for a momentum-swinging 80-yard touchdown in Kansas City’s 28-21 victory over the Redskins on Sunday at Kansas City, Mo.

“Jared Allen played a great game for us,” Knight said. “He was all over the field making plays.”

Chief defensive end Carlos Hall, who was given credit for knocking the ball out of Rock Cartwright’s grasp, sheepishly admitted that Allen was also part of the play.

“I think I got an arm on the ball, then at the same time Jared came and finished it off,” he said. “We both were there.”

After the fumble, Knight got two good blocks from Derrick Johnson and sailed into the end zone for his fifth career touchdown, one of three long scoring plays in an eventful second half.

Both teams are 3-2.

Tampa Bay 27, Miami 13 -- Michael Pittman ran for 127 yards and a touchdown at Tampa, Fla., as the Buccaneers (5-1) ruined Ricky Williams’ return from a one-year retirement and four-game suspension.

Williams was held to eight yards rushing in five attempts, and his best run of the day -- 13 yards -- was nullified by a penalty. Miami is 2-3.

Seattle 42, Houston 10 -- The NFC West-leading Seahawks (4-2) methodically plundered Houston with Shaun Alexander’s four touchdown runs at Seattle, dropping the NFL’s only winless team to 0-5.

Seattle set a franchise record with 320 yards rushing. Alexander ran for 141, and his backup, Maurice Morris, added 104.

Alexander cut back his runs and bounced off flailing Texan defenders en route to scores of four, five, one and 23 yards.

The third ended Seattle’s initial drive of the second half and extended the Seahawks’ lead to 28-3 midway through the third quarter.

The NFL’s leading runner extended his franchise-record to 26 games with at least 100 yards.
