Crash Kills Moreno Valley Hockey Player
A junior hockey league player from Moreno Valley and two Oregon teenagers were killed early Sunday morning when their car drifted across a divider into oncoming traffic on a two-lane road outside Portland, Ore.
Jonathan Medina, 19, a player on the River City Jaguars, a professional development team in Beaverton, Ore., was driving a 2003 Subaru WRX south on Scholls Ferry Road just after midnight Sunday when the car crossed into the northbound lane, fishtailed and struck a 1993 Ford Explorer, authorities said.
The two passengers in the Subaru’s back seat, Gwendolyn Lindsay-Bradley and Moriah Hathaway, both 17, were killed instantly, said Lt. Michael Shults, of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Department.
Medina’s teammate, Reed Fuller, 19, from Lincoln, Neb., was in the passenger seat and was treated for injuries at a nearby hospital and released. The driver of the Explorer was also treated and released.
The Multnomah County vehicular crimes team is investigating the cause of the wreck, Shults said.
Alcohol was found in the back seat of the Subaru, but authorities were still determining whether the driver or passengers had been drinking, Shults said.
The road was wet and slick with dry patches, and temperatures were above freezing, Shults said.
Both drivers and Fuller were wearing seat belts, Shults said. Investigators had not yet determined if the back seat passengers were wearing seat belts.
