Lawmakers Bow to Protest, Repeal Raises
From Times Wire Reports
After bringing four months of verbal and written abuse down on their heads, Pennsylvania lawmakers repealed a pay raise they had voted themselves in the middle of the night in July.
Gov. Ed Rendell signed the legislation less than three hours after the state Senate approved it 50 to 0 in Harrisburg. It passed the House 197 to 1 on Monday.
Radio talk show hosts, editorial writers and citizen groups had criticized lawmakers over the size of the raises -- 16% to 54% -- and the way the legislation was handled.
