Jon Garland trusts his catchers, his defense and -- most important -- himself. That’s why he’s the American League’s first seven-game winner.

Garland gave up eight hits in eight innings and struck out Miguel Tejada on a 3-and-2 changeup with two on to stop a late Oriole rally Thursday night as the White Sox defeated Baltimore, 3-2, at Chicago.

“It was one of the best pitches I threw all night,” Garland (7-0) said of the eighth-inning strikeout. “There are some RBIs out there for him and he wants to swing the bat and hit. He swung over the top of it.”

Kansas City 7, Tampa Bay 5 -- The Royals got their first win since Tony Pena resigned as manager, a rain-shortened six-inning victory at Kansas City, Mo.

The Royals blew a 5-0 lead then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Devil Rays made two outs in the seventh before the game was called.
