34 Deaths Linked to Pig-Borne Disease

Officials have reported 174 confirmed and suspected cases of a pig-borne disease blamed on the bacteria Streptococcus suis in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, the official New China News Agency reported. Thirty-four farmers have died since June.
One illness was also reported in a slaughterhouse worker in the southern province of Guangdong, bordering Hong Kong, a hospital official said. Two cases were reported in Hong Kong last week.
