Beach Is Closed After Spill
A ruptured sewer line in Redondo Beach sent about 10,000 gallons of raw sewage into a storm drain and out into the ocean Sunday, causing authorities to close more than a mile of beach to swimmers.
The rupture occurred about 9:30 a.m. near Pacific Coast Highway and Ruby Street, and the beach was closed after residents reported seeing sewage seep up from beneath the sidewalk and flow into a storm drain, said Redondo Beach Fire Department Division Chief Dan Madrigal.
About a mile and a half of beach, from the Redondo Beach Pier to Avenue E, was closed to swimmers by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, although the sand remained open to beachgoers.
The sewer line was repaired by Sunday afternoon, but signs warning swimmers to enter at their own risk were expected to remain in place for a day or two. “We’re hopeful that it’ll be no longer than 48 hours,” Madrigal said. Test results on bacteria levels along the shore should be available late today, he said. “We’re hopeful that later Tuesday afternoon we can reopen the water,” Madrigal said.
